Essential Drying Treatment for PC Plastic Granules

Polycarbonate (PC) plastic is renowned for its high performance but has a significant affinity for moisture, leading to a high water absorption rate. Therefore, a crucial pre-processing step is mandatory: preheating and drying. The specific drying parameters depend on the material type; pure PC typically requires drying at 120°C, while modified PC grades are generally dried at a slightly lower temperature of 110°C. In both cases, the drying time should be a minimum of 4 hours but must not exceed 10 hours to prevent thermal degradation. A practical method to judge sufficient drying is the air extrusion technique, where a visually moist-free extrudate indicates proper dryness. Regarding material sustainability, the use of recycled PC content is feasible. A use ratio of up to 20% recycled material is common, and for some non-critical applications, 100% recycled content can be utilized, with the actual amount dependent on the product’s quality requirements. A critical note is that different masterbatches or recycled materials should not be mixed indiscriminately, as this can severely compromise the properties of the finished product.
